ApertureExpert Live Training Session 015: Adjustments; Dodge & Burn

Welcome to the fifteenth ApertureExpert Live Training session!

What, you missed the last ones? That’s easily fixable with a visit to the Live Training catalog, $2 each and a large HD download.

This session is the seventh in a series of the deep-dive into Adjustments in Aperture 3. In session 008 we started with the Exposure and Enhance tools, in 009 we covered White Balance and Highlights & Shadows, in 010 we hit on Levels, and in 011 we did Curves. (013 was a separate special session). Session 014 was on retouching, and now we jump into Dodge & Burn! Time permitting, we’ll look at the other “Quick Brushes” in the list.

Thursday, Feb 23th 2:00pm PST (check your time zone on signup)

REMEMBER! You can now subscribe to the ICAL feed and have reminders built into iCal, Google Calendar, or whatever calendar app you use! (enable auto-refresh when you subscribe or you won’t see the updates)

Please be sure to check your time zone carefully. When you register, you can choose to view the time in your own time zone. Please do to ensure you don’t miss out!

Space is limited to just 100 seats—sign up early and read the attendance policy!

Did you miss the earlier sessions? No fear, they’re available here.

Agenda

30 minutes - lesson
15 minutes - Q&A

Questions (Q&A)

Feel free to submit your ON-TOPIC question(s) any time during the session, however they will not be addressed until the Q&A. If you’re thinking of submitting a question, take your time to craft it into a logical, coherent question that I can read live and answer without needing further info. IT’S LIKELY NOT ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED—we simply won’t have time.

If you don’t get your question answered live, feel free to post it in the forum.

Download

Remember, you’re watching this for free, but the paid $2 downloadable version will be available at here at ApertureExpert.tv within 24 hours after the session. Even if you get to watch live, if you enjoyed the session, I’d certainly appreciate the support of buying the download anyway. Naturally you’re under no obligation to do so, but it’ll help keep us “on the air”!

That’s it! Enjoy the session.

Dodge & Burn was an excellent presentation, I learned a lot..

I've attended a few of Joseph's Live Training sessions. As usual, Joseph doesn't disappoint. Even being familiar with Dodge & Burn, after this session I'm already doing a better job of blending the adjustments, keeping the changes subtle yet effective. I found the detailed explanation of the Aperture brush tool particularly insightful....something applicable well beyond Dodge and Burn. Thanks Joseph!

This is another good lesson that ApertureExpert is providing. I didn't know anything about Dodge and Burn before (just vaguely heard of it from friends in the photography world). After attending the online lesson yesterday, I am now excited to try it out and learn this adjustment technique on some of my photos in Aperture. Thank you Joseph!

Looking forward to the next lesson.

Hmm, it doesn't seem to be available in the Live Catalog, yet, despite being notified that it is. Anyone else having this issue?

This was my first Live Training session, but won't be my last! Joseph gets to the point and shows you how to use Aperture to great effect. There isn't a moment's wasted time. I will be downloading this and several previous training sessions for future reference and to expand my knowledge of Aperture.
One negative: after Joseph's summary of all the advantages of pen tablets for photo editing in Aperture, I was convinced. So it looks like I'll be spending money to buy one! but I am convinced it will be money well spent. LOL

Thanks everyone! John, try again… I think I loaded the buy button too soon on one page, but it should be available now.

Love them all. A great resource.

I found the Dodge and Burn training to be very helpful. I had not used the tools very much before but now I feel I will be using them more. Also the keyboard shortcuts are great.

Adjustments Dodge & Burn has also been my very first live training. I really enjoy the way you explain the tools and various settings in Aperture, Joseph! Especially the detailed explanation on the brush tools functionality gave me some very helpful insight to what's really possible - why else would somebody paint in white or grey strokes on a black background? ;-)

I can only recommend this video to anybody thinking about using Aperture for selective image adjustments.

I have attended all of the session either live or via the download and have never been disappointed. While I consider myself an experienced user with Aperture, I have always learned something of value at each session. Joseph is an excellent instructor and has a knack for hitting all of the salient points thoroughly within the limited amount of time in each session. Looking forward to more!

As usual, Joseph challenged me with some new ideas on the way Aperture works. Sometimes it is easy to bog down in a 'getting the job done', without seeing all the settings and opportunities that Aperture offers even with something as photographically simple as dodge or burn.
The simple tip of the Higlights/Midtone/Shadows, and how the active one shows in the Dodge/burn hud was the 'oh' moment in today's session. It has already saved me some time.

This was my first session, and I learned a lot. Even though the time difference is not always easy for us in Europe, I enjoyed it, understood it and will certainly be back for more! Many Thanks...

This was a great session. Although I used Dodge and Burn before I now have a much better understanding how things work.
Joseph does a great job explaining things.

Thanks again everyone for the comments. Santiago, I do try to shift the times around and get them Euro- and Asia-friendly too. I'll be sure to get some more of those in the future :)
