Aperture SlideShow Support 1.1 Update Released Today

A new update hit today, Aperture SlideShow 1.1 Support. According to Software Update…

This update addresses an issue affecting the playback of HD video clips used in Aperture 3 slideshows on Snow Leopard. Audio and video tracks now remain properly synced in video clips that have been trimmed.

The update is recommended for all users of Aperture 3.

I’ve been hearing lots of issues with sound not outputting, and incompatible playback on certain devices, so hopefully this will fix most if not all of those. Personally I haven’t played with slideshows much yet (I’m still a bit bitter that I spent $100 on Animoto less than a week before this came out), so I haven’t seen the issues people have been talking about.

If you’re playing with slideshows and have seen any problems, run Software Update, re-output your slideshows, and report back here!

Keeping Track of Files Emailed, Printed, Exported & More in Aperture 3

There’s a clever new metadata set in Aperture 3 called Photo Usage that keeps track of files that have been emailed, exported, ordered as print, ordered via book, or printed. And where there’s a metadata tag, there’s the ability to search.

The new criteria appear to be not included in any of the default Metadata sets, so to view them you’ll have to create a custom one. Open the Metadata tab, and from the drop-down list of metadata views, choose Edit…

Aperture 3 Labels as Bookmarks

One of the new features in Aperture 3 are colored labels. Personally I wasn’t so sure what I’d do with them, but of course it’s always nice to see more options.

A feature I’ve always wanted was a way to bookmark an edit. Say I’m going through a 1,000 image shoot, and need to stop to do something else; maybe look at another project, or just shut down for the night. In Aperture 2, there was no way to know where I’d left off when I came back to the album. Sure, if it was the first pass I could just look for the unrated photos (assuming I was rating all of them… which I don’t). If it was a subsequent pass, there was simply no way to tell where I’d left off.

Until now.

A Few Subtle Differences Between Aperture 2 & Aperture 3

In updating my eBook “In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3”, updating screenshots and the like, I noticed a few subtle changes that don’t necessarily deserver a full “tip” post, but are worth sharing here.

When I started this list I thought I’d have more… I guess towards the end I kinda forgot to keep documenting them. Owell, here’s a few for ya…

  • Folders no longer come in two flavors; yellow and blue. There never was a reason as far as I could tell, and now that’s gone away. All folders are blue.
  • New versions are no longer stacked automatically by default, but there is a preference to turn that back on. Not sure why the decision was made to turn it off, but I’d guess it’s for simplicity. If people don’t understand stacks, not having them at all is easier than trying to figure them out. I turned mine back on.
  • When you’re zoomed into an image and panned to a particular spot, and then left/right arrow to load different images, the pan position now stays put. That’s a fantastic improvement as it makes toggling between multiple images to compare them not only easier and faster, but frankly possible if you’re looking for subtle differences. Bravo.

Obviously there’s a lot more than that, but better to share these three than to delete the post ;-)

“In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3” eBook is complete!

Thanks to everyone for your support and patience… the new “In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3“ eBook is OUT! I’ll be sending out new download codes to everyone who pre-purchased right away.

When I first released the Aperture 2 eBook, I said that if Aperture 3 was released within 30 days, you’d get the updated eBook for free. Well, Aperture 3 took longer than I anticipated to release, and then updating the eBook took a bit longer as well. So to say thank you for your patience and support, anyone who bought the Aperture 2 eBook, at any time, will get a free update to the Aperture 3 eBook as well!

A huge THANK YOU to you all. Now, back to work… I have videos to edit and produce, as well as the “Aperture 3 Adjustments Preset Pack” to finish. Which, by the way, is going to be wicked-cool. I’ve come up with some pretty clever combinations of Adjustments that hopefully will surprise you and make it worth the wait!

Enjoy the eBook, and please, let me know what you think of it.
