ProKit Update 7.0 & Camera Raw Update 3.7 on Software Update

Good morning Aperture fans.

It looks like a couple of updates hit the Software Update that you’ll want to install. As always, just select (Apple menu) > Software Update… if it hasn’t popped up on your screen already.

Digital Camera Raw Compatibly Update 3.7

This one will be greatly welcomed by owners of some of the latest digital cameras. The updated supported camera list adds:

  • Fujufilm FinePix X100
  • Nikon D5100
  • Olympus E-PL2
  • Olympus XZ-1
  • Samsung GX-1S

I know a few people who’ll be thrilled to see the Fuji X100 supported. That’s a camera I’ve been oggling since Photokina of last year, but haven’t dropped the coin on it yet. I bought the Panasonic GF1 (didn’t much like the GF2) in the interim, and I’m very pleased with that camera, so I’m not quite as gagging to grab the X100 at this point. Still, it looks to be a fantastic little camera, quirks aside.

As always, the complete RAW compatibility list can be found at support.apple.com/kb/HT3825.

ProKit Update 7.0

The ProKit makes up the interface elements in professional apps, which includes Final Cut Studio, Aperture, and even iPhoto. I don’t see anything in the update list that’s specific to Aperture, but points like “Improved support for PopOver style tooltips”, “Font Smoothing” and even the “gap between a menu and submenu” could show up in Aperture.

The tooltips I’m interested in for sure, as I find myself often toggling the t key to turn them off and back on again to get them to show up quickly in Aperture. And actually, it does appear to be a bit more responsive… with View > Metadata Display > Image Tooltips enabled, I’m seeing the tip show up constantly as I roll over thumbnails, where before it could get stuck in a seeming “off” position, requiring a re-toggle. Nice!
