Multiple Mac Workflow
Read description, download 1080p or watch low rez free!
This is a topic that keeps coming up in the forums, so I finally decided to record a video on it. The process really is straight forward, but as always the video is full of little tips to help you get the most out of the experience. What I covered here is two things:
- How to add photos to a new Library on a portable Mac, then merge that Library into your main Library
- How to take projects from your main Library on the road with you for further editing — either full editing, or just metadata editing.
And in both cases, I discuss how to handle Managed and Referenced libraries. Cool!

Live Adjustments
Read description, download 1080p or watch low rez free!
For this session, I asked readers to submit images for me to edit live. While I’ve showed pretty much every tool in Aperture now, there were requests for a more “real world” application. So, with a collection of user-submitted images, I recorded a live edit.

Aperture 3.3 SPECIAL ($4)
Read description and watch it… free?!
This is a different session than normal, as we took on a live panel to discuss and explore Aperture 3.3 together. It’s over two hours long, and is the first deep look at the new features in Aperture 3.3.
The complete video is available for free on YouTube (embedded below) at low resolution, and as always the high rez one is available for purchase here. I am putting this one at $4 though because of the duration and nature of this… a lot went into getting ready very quickly for this session and I hope you don’t mind the price jump for this SPECIAL edition.
The downloaded videos are all 1280x720 (720p HD) perfect for playback on the computer screen, iPad or even your tv.

Live Training Session 020:
Editing Workflow, Printing and
Moving Managed to Referenced
Read description and watch the trailer…
This was a special Q&A session, where I responded to requests of “What’s your approach to creative image processing”, “Can you show all aspects of printing and soft proofing”, as well as “How do you move from Managed to Referenced”?
I was intending to broadcast live but it turned out I couldn’t from my current location, so I just recorded a session on my own. And guess what… it turned into 90 minutes (!!) of training. Wow. I spent the first 50 minutes showing off three different images and my approaches to them (live, non-rehearsed, “see how I really do this” kind of thing), then 25 minutes on the print dialog (which is kind of amazing since I’m somewhat clueless when it comes to printing… and so in full disclosure, if you’re looking for the end-all be-all description of printing in Aperture, do NOT buy this video for it), and finally the last 15 minutes on moving from Managed to Referenced.
NOTE: Unfortunately an annoying audible buzz appeared a bit over 30 minutes into the recording. It doesn’t make it unwatchable but it is annoying. Since the first 30+ minutes are just fine, and that’s what I’m usually selling for $2, I decided to release this anyway. Even if you can’t bear to watch the whole thing, you’re still getting 30+ minutes of goodness at that price. I have a call in to tech support to figure out what happened :(
The downloaded videos are all 1280x720 (720p HD) perfect for playback on the computer screen, iPad or even your tv.

Books
Read description and watch it… free?!
This session was on Books — what you need to know to create and edit a book in Aperture 3. I thought I’d split this into two sessions, but had a cup of coffee before we went live so finished it in one. Enjoy!
For those who watched live, the echo problem is NOT in the final recording, but there is a sync issue in the Q&A. Good news is, we have solved the echo problem for the next broadcast and I think that solves the sync issue, too. We shall see!
The downloaded videos are all 1280x720 (720p HD) perfect for playback on the computer screen, iPad or even your tv.
Watch the entire thing, for free! Wait, what? New format… I broadcast using Google+ “Hangouts” and have decided to leave the entire session on line for 100% free. What’s the catch? Easy… their recording is only 480p, whereas the $2 one is 720p HD (1:1 to how it was broadcast). The echo is gone, although there are sync issues in the Q&A… good news is I think we figured that one out finally!
it’s still quiet in here…

Places
Read description and watch preview
In yet another EXTRA LONG session, lasting just under 60 minutes, we covered everything there is to know about Places in Aperture 3. How to drag and drop photos on the map, use the search to find exact locations, create custom locations (i.e. “home”), sync locations with your iPhone photos, sync locations with an external GPS device, and sync with a very cool iPhone GPS logger called GeoTagr (a.k.a. GeoLogTag)!
This was a very complex demo in that we had lots and lots of pieces to make it work… we had some hiccups but it all worked out in the end, and I think it was quite fun to see actually :)

“Thank you for an amazing display of Aperture Places functions, last night, that I never had looked at before. It was brilliant.” —F Landes on ApertureExpert
“Lol, anyone dared to blink your eyes during todays training? Fast and powerful :-) Thanks again!” —@Staxrod on Twitter
“Uber-cool stuff with geotagging photos…. loved it!” —R J Coleman on Google+
“Well, Joseph, you’ve done it again. Once more you announced a training session on a subject which made me immediately roll my eyes and say, Places? Why would we need a training on bloody Places? There is nothing to know, and I know all there can be. Once the session started I was promptly humbled by not only how little I know about Places, but the amount of abilities this feature has that is a whole magnitude more than I even thought was possible.” —A Tekant on ApertureExpert

Adjustments; Edge Sharpen, Chromatic Aberration,
Color Monochrome
Read description and watch preview
In yet another EXTRA LONG session, lasting just under 60 minutes, we wrapped up the last of the Adjustments that we’ll be covering in Live Training, and YOU the viewers picked the topics. I had a submission form available and I had loads of suggestions, and narrowed it down to the top three.
In this sessoin we covered Edge Sharpen, Chromatic Aberration and Color Monochrome. Three great topics, and the first two especially had considerable depth. This could have been one of my favorite sessions!
We had an audio problem in the beginning, and had to start over, so when you see me incessently checking the chat window in this, it’s just so I can ensure people can still here me. You’re only seeing the good part here, though ;-)

“Again a great Webinar. Now I finally fully understand Sharpening.” —C Van on ApertureExpert
“This was the first training session that I participated in and I have also purchased it to revisit the examples that Joseph provides.” —M Brown on ApertureExpert
“I had never used the Chromatic Aberration tool, so that training was invaluable!” —D Donovan on ApertureExpert
This quote was so great I had to include the whole thing… “ApertureExpert Live Trainings stand out due to their user oriented approach. The way technical background and practical work within Aperture has been presented also in this very particular session can hardly be supplied by large enterprises. The title as well as the content of “Adjustments, you tell me!” are once more proof of not only the ability to listen to the users’ requests but also a degree of spontaneity, that makes Joseph’s presentations so pleasing. Neither any loss of sound or difficulty in finding the appropriate words (“peeping vs. pooping” ;-) can keep us from staying tuned. Looking forward to the next webinar!” —d-light on ApertureExpert

Adjustments; Dodge & Burn (& how brushes work)
Read description and watch preview
In this EXTRA LONG session, lasting just over 60 minutes, we have a look at the some of the oldest image correction tools in the industry; Dodge & Burn. Of course how we do this in Aperture is considerably different than in the darkroom, and even if you’re used to the tools in Photoshop (or perhaps especially if…), you’ll appreciate the differences in Aperture and seeing how to properly use the tools here.
Dodge & Burn are actually all about painting a layer mask between two versions of your image, and that’s how we spend most of this session—learning how those layer masks work so you can get the most from your Dodge & Burn tools.

Adjustments; Color and B&W
This fifth session on Adjustments covers the Color and Black & White tools. In the Color section, we explain how each slider correlates to what you see on the color wheel, how to isolate a precise range of colors without using brushes, how to use multiple instances of the same adjustment to do complex color changes, and at the end in the Q&A (oops, almost forgot!) talk about how to reduce digital noise using the Color too. We also get into the Black and White filter, which is somewhat limited but worth knowing for simple B&W conversion. Live Training Session 011:
Adjustments; Curves
This fourth session on Adjustments covers Curves! It’s the one many of you have been waiting for. We start with a brief explanation of reading a histogram (somewhat repeated from Levels, but you never know what else you might learn), then go through all the Curves options, including the auto settings, explaining Luminance vs RGB curves, and look at how you can fix many off-colored images (due to impossible white balance or bizarre lighting situations) and simultaneously fix the exposure, just using Curves. We go pretty deep on this, and if the explanation sounds familiar, it’s because it’s simliar to Levels—the results you can achieve with both are simliar, but Curves takes the ribbon for sure. As always, we wrap with an informative Q&A with some great questions from the live audience.
By the way, this session ran long, so it’s over an hour of education!

We explored the import window at lenght, and of the Import Settings options, we discussed the File Info, Aperture Library, Rename Files the Metadata Presets windows, and also went through how to build your own presets for folder structure, version naming and metadata sets. In the next session, we’ll finish out the import dialog—there are still the Time Zone, Adjustment Presets, File Types, RAW+JPEG Pairs, Actions and Backup Location to cover!

What’s a pixel, a megapixel, a DPI or a PPI? What does it mean when I see “1024 × 768 @ 72 PPI”? And why does it matter? These questions, and many more, are answered in this Live Training session. This is not a topic that’s Aperture specific—in fact, we only jump to Aperture once in this entire training. This is fundamental knowledge that’s critical to understand when exporting, posting, sharing, and printing your digital photography.
