ApertureExpert Live Training Session 020: Creative Editing, Printing & Soft Proofing, and Moving Managed to Referenced Online Now

It’s up! The latest Live Training, where I answered three key questions over 90 minutes (!!) is now online.

The questions were:

  • What’s your approach to creative image processing?
  • Can you show all aspects of printing and soft proofing?
  • How do you move from Managed to Referenced?

I was intending to broadcast live but it turned out I couldn’t from my current location, so I just recorded a session on my own. And guess what… it turned into 90 minutes of training. Wow.

I spent the first 50 minutes showing off three different images and my approaches to them (live, non-rehearsed, “see how I really do this” kind of thing), then 25 minutes on the print dialog (which is kind of amazing since I’m somewhat clueless when it comes to printing… and so in full disclosure, if you’re looking for the end-all be-all description of printing in Aperture, do NOT buy this video for it), and finally the last 15 minutes on moving from Managed to Referenced.

NOTE: Unfortunately an annoying audible buzz appeared a bit over 30 minutes into the recording. It doesn’t make it unwatchable but it is annoying. Since the first 30+ minutes are just fine, and that’s what I’m usually selling for $2, I decided to release this anyway. Even if you can’t bear to watch the whole thing, you’re still getting 30+ minutes of goodness at that price. I have a call in to tech support to figure out what happened :(

ApertureExpert not-so-Live Training Session 020

Oh brother… small problem.

Apparently Google+ Hangouts “On Air” are “not available in my country”. I’m in Austria right now and had no idea that this is something that would be limited this way.

So, no live broadcast.

Chalk one up for GoToWebinar then. I didn’t have this problem from them, for sure (did one broadcast from a hotel in Vietnam!).

I’ll just record a session on my own and upload it. I’ll try to tackle the questions asked in the forum post, but fair note — I’m rubbish when it comes to printing. I’ll go through the dialog but I am *not* a printing expert at all.

sorry folks… seeya next time.

Aperture 3.2.4 & Digital Camera Raw 3.13 Updates

Two new updates in the pipeline; Aperture 3.2.4 and Digital Camera Raw 3.13!

Aperture 3.2.4

There are only two bullets in this small update, one of which has been discussed at length in these forums, so I’m sure we’re all thrilled to see this addressed:

  • Improves stability on Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
  • Addresses an issue that could prevent the Viewer from updating correctly after editing a photo using an external editor.

Let us know in the comments if it’s working for you now, or more importantly, if it’s not working for you after the update!

Digital Camera Raw 3.13

Another update for the latest digital cameras on the market…

  • Canon EOS-1D X
  • Nikon D800E
  • Nikon D3200
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5
  • Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF5
  • Sony Alpha SLT-A57

Oooh I do wish I had the EOS 1D X to tell you how well that works ;-)

As always, just run Software Update to get this goodness, or if you bought Aperture from the Mac App Store, then update from there.

Creating a Standard Project to Use on Every Shoot

As we all know, Aperture creates an empty library every time we start a new one. There’s no such thing as a “Project Preset”. This is a problem for many of use that like to create elaborate Projects that contain Smart Folders, Albums, Slideshows, Books and other useful things.

This is especially useful for people like me that routinely have audio attachments, video files, and stills on any given shoot. I also like to have five Smart Folders for every star rating.

Here’s a look at my “Standard Project” I import into every new Aperture library.

So, how do I duplicate a project that doesn’t yet exist? I have a “Standard Project” saved to a folder on my desktop called “Aperture Resources” that contains all the good stuff I like. Every time I start a new Aperture library I simply drag that “Standard Project” into my Aperture Library and rename it. Then, throughout the life of that library, I simply Control Click —> Duplicate Project.

This is the best way I know to have consistent Projects through out my libraries, but I’m not afraid to change and customize them as the need arises.
